Week 6 – Brief and Strategy

Lecture Comments & Reflections

Key take outs from Interviews:

– Identify a structure
– Communication is key
– Deep dive into subject area
– Talking to people (audience feedback)
– Being aware of what is going on currently in relation to the project brief

Design Development (weekly Challenge)

Initial thoughts around strategic plan / timeline of events over the coming 7 weeks.

Outlining key zones which will need to be fleshed out with content including actions, dates and potential obstacles

Next steps are to form the plan in a visual way as well as in a form so I can track the stages as I go along. This will help with my time and when items need to be completed. The visual journey will allow the client to easily understand the journey of development, strategy and intended outcomes.

I have also identified that I need to refine the project and select a ‘category’ of objects as I won’t be able to work with the whole collection. This would cause time constraints and delivery methods.

Potential Route Ideas

Initial outline for strategic plan / timeline / obstacles.

Who: Science Museum & James Shaw

Description of the project / Introduction: Explore and discover prototype design solutions to present information to the public in relation to public access to the digital archive collection

What are the intended outcomes and how will they be achieved? Speculative parts.

Goals/ objectives / Timeplan

Phase 1 / week 1 w/c 18th October

Undertake in depth research into competitive archiving materials to gain an understanding of what has been achieved to date. Gain an understanding of the project needs, intended target audience and output. Gain face to face insights from client around the project.

Phase 2 / week 2  w/c 25th October

Put together and construct a solid timeline of events, making sure all stages of the process take into account the clients needs, timeframes and goals of the project. Identify an potential obstacles the project may encounter from personal to environmental.

Phase 3 / week 3 w/c 1st November (2 weeks)

Once a clear understanding of the project is evident further research can be undertaken into the visual and potential look of the outcome, exploring competitors, existing and other routes which may have an influence on the project.

Kick start initial thoughts and sketches around potential routes for the project. Develop and experiment with ideas.

Phase 4 / week 4 w/c 8th November (continued from week 3)

Continued concept development of idea here…

Phase 5 / week 5  w/c 15th November

Further concept development. Begin to refine and develop 3 concepts for audience testing and client feedback. Record feedback from audience as this will provide vital when moving forward with the project. Identify any obstacles at present. Reflect on progress so far.

Phase 6 / week 6 w/c 22nd November

Design Development. Refine the selected route of progression from the audience and client feedback.

Phase 7 / week 7 w/c 29th November

Design Development. Prepare finalised route for client presentation. Finalised route should also explore application of designs. (still part of development stage)

Phase 8 / week 8 w/c 6th December

Outcome – Delivery and application of project. Client and user testing?

Strategies for project (a work in progress)

With the on going digitization of the huge collection, The Science Museum is looking for a new way of showcasing the objects which will allow for deeper explorations and discovery of the whole collection.

This project aims to encourage the discovery of objects  through the use of ‘collecting and sharing’ your own science museum collection this also enhancing the audience reach.

The outlined objective  will support the Science Museum’s challenge in encouraging the audience to search the full collection.

Potential Deliverables

The development of a solution which allows users to create their own collection either in physical and or digital format. Exploring the use of ‘card collections’

A prototype which reaches a wider breadth of the museum collection through the use ‘collecting and playing’

A solution which allows for a wider audience to explore and discover the collection. (Potentially globally)

Weekly Critical Reflection

What went well

I have tried to get ahead this week and keep on track, alongside this I have really embraced the research element at the start of this project, learning from the past 4 week project. This has helped me realise a few more intentions early on which can be built upon.

Constructing a plan for the project has also allowed me to see the route to delivery, I think here though I could re visit and create a more detailed break down to help me through the weeks. This could be in the form of a task list for every week I go through.

Continue to work on

Continue to keep the project live and go with what I want to create, don’t slip off and choose a simple or easy route, really challenge me ambition. For this project I want to engage in more audience research and feedback to get real thoughts on the ideas, this will help with the development of the project.

Prompts for next week: Stay engaged, feedback to peers, research relevance, intentions, be brave
