Research into Service Design processes

Task 1 – Selected service design process

The Double Diamond Process.

Why did I pick this process? I have used the double diamond approach within my work. Alongside this I think it’s effectiveness and method can be applied to multiple solutions / problems. It doesn’t work for everyone but I feel there is space for it to be adapted slightly to work for you (maybe the process is extended or broken down further) As long as you still get in the key points.

100 word response:

The double diamond approach helps create solutions from, discover a wider range of sources, build knowledge and deliver a solution to a potential problem. The process may look linear but its success lies in its areas of iteration, allowing the designer (for example) to re evaluate and research further if needed. Within its first stages (explore) techniques such as interviews or questionnaires can be undertaken to provide further data.

Through its 4 stages, explore, define, ideate and implement. The double diamond approach allows a challenge to visit each step in detail, this allowing for multiple ideas to be considered and the best solution to be discovered and tested (here a design sprint can be used to further test and develop)

Existing Campaigns:

https://illo.tv/natureorg – Illo Studio and the Nature Conservancy come together for campaign.

Why have I chosen this campaign to look at?

Before even fully immersing myself into the campaign I am struck by the visual nature of the campaign, its vibrant, it has animation and it means business? It’s clearly showing a positive message which wants to be heard. A campaign which needs to be heard by all not just a targeted audience.

‘What Design can do’ comments ” stories are compelling and easy-to-digest, with strong messaging and punchy sequences” which sums up the vision of the campaign.

The campaign not only tackles the ongoing climate emergency but they’re hoping it will look into solutions to climate change in upcoming series of the campaign.

Is this more of an infographic / visual communication rather than a campaign?

Ikea Plastic Surgery

Waste Wall

A solution which is asking the students of a university to be involved in waste management internally, rather than outsourcing this solution. Outsourcing the solution costs money, takes time and has an environmental impact. This solution although simple and low fi provides a streamlined service which gives back. This changes the responsibility of the users as its asking them to change and follow instructions as per the signage on the waste wall (plastic, tetra pack etc)

The solution also starts to explore the design and build of recycled furniture solutions.

What most attracted me to this is the low fi take on a serious issue. Simple materials used to construct simple and clear solutions which are easy to follow and have impact. This not only has a positive impact it also starts to share that knowledge of what’s possible amongst groups of people

Copywright – Conscious Designs

Mobile Solar Powered Cold Room

Solar Freeze aims to reduce the postharvest loss within developing countries, which currently can be as high as 80%. Temperature is an important factor within growing and harvesting. Fresh produce can spoil and perish within a matter of days, with a cold storage solution, produce can have a longer shelf life. At post harvest within developing countries there is a lack of if none cold storage solutions to help reduce this.

Workshop Challenge 2 – Gogoro Network

Gogoro Network ‘The fastest, easiest, smartest way to get around’

The Gogoro Network is a battery swapping solution helping transform cities into more renewable and efficient cities. The battery swapping solution is for scooters and is currently operational within Taiwan. There are over 2200 sites and 10915 racks within Taiwan itself making it convenient and quick to swap your battery out.

Gogoro Network supports the swap to electric within your cities to help reduce pollution, with Gogoro currently having reduced 442,876,900 kilograms of co2.

Gogoro use the swapping format to allow for an easier charging solution. This stops the need to stop and wait at charging stations. Batteries are pre charged and are portable from locations around the cities.

My thoughts

Super idea which has had such a huge impact on Taiwan alone. What I most like is that the identified problem (time taken to charge) is at the forefront, allowing individuals to navigate and plan better solutions to trips across Taiwan. This not only considers the individual problem but the wider environmental problem of pollution within densely populated cities.

In the development of this technological solution the process would have involved the user’s heavily, finding out what and where they go, how far and what they needed to switch to electric. This would have had a huge impact on where battery swapping stations were located. With this only being for scooters within Taiwan has there been a conscious decision to start here first?  Could this solution be moved into cars or other vehicles? If so how would that suit the user and the wider impact.

What is it solving? Environmental reduction in pollution, reducing journey times, more effective travel solutions, impact that pollution has on humans within cities.

Weekly Reflection

I haven’t done a weekly reflection in a long time but this week was a challenge within a new sector I didn’t have much knowledge on.

Service Design has opened up my mind to looking more locally within my environment and seeing what is possible within an immediate area. What solutions can be looked at to provide an improved way of moving / seeing / impact. My local town has a few issues which I can now see as exciting and potentially interesting areas to explore (The Local Pond, for example) is an area which needs reviving, cleaned and re wilding to attract back the wildlife / support the wildlife within the area.

Even thought this has been a tough week I have really enjoyed reading and getting to grips with what Service Design is. I feel this week will help catapult a few self initiated projects or inform projects further down the line on the MA

Points for next week: Experiment and get stuck in more. Could my outcomes next week be more explorative within their presentation
